Text messaging has changed the way we communicate. Duh.
But there’s a lot to be said. Without help from verbal and/or visual cues, text messages run the risk of being misinterpreted. And no one wants to be misinterpreted as a jerk, so what do we do? We put “lol” at the end of our texts. I hate “lol” when used to take the edge off. Don’t get me wrong. If you do this, I can’t really blame you. I do the same every time I end a text with a smiley face, any text that could be mistaken as short or snarky or sarcastic — basically everything I text.
There’s also the “haha” approach, or the less popular winky face.
I don’t know. Texting is good for those times when I don’t want to have a long conversation with someone over something small. It also allows us to multi-task like never before. But I’m just so sick of feeling unwarranted pressured to convince people that I’m not mean spirited.
I’M NOT MEAN SPIRITED! : )
